The mental illnesses of the patients can range from somewhat mild to rather severe. Psychiatric nurses work in many outlets, including home care, private hospitals, state institutions, different branches of military hospitals, and quite a few more. First, it’s important to understand that psychiatric nurses work in a stressful environment. Sometimes, patients are very mentally disturbed and working with them can be difficult. If you’re truly interested in this field, then it’s important to have a strong emotional balance and the ability to leave your job’s stresses at work.
You will need a high school diploma, of course. Then, you’ll need to go to college and get your bachelor’s degree as a registered nurse. This alone is actually an enduring process, and it’s already more education than the average person receives. However, registered mental health nurses are required to have a master’s degree or a doctorate to work, so you’ll need to go the extra mile. It’s four years for a bachelor’s degree, and it is two to four more years for a master’s degree or doctorate, depending which one you choose.
Once you’ve received the required education, there are a lot of daily responsibilities that will be required of you. You’ll be caring for mentally distressed patients, so you’ll need to assess their situation and discuss the best course of action to treat them. You need to build relationships with patients in order to build their trust. You’ll be expected to administer proper medications and monitor their results. You’ll run group sessions, and coordinate events to develop the social skills of patients. You’ll be required to work with a patient’s family in order to educate and update them on the patient’s health status.
